Ashley Bennett, M.Ed., assistant professor of education and chair of the education department at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), has been named a recipient of the 2026 ‘12 Under 40’ award by the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce and the Tribune-Star.
The honor, which recognizes 12 outstanding young professionals in west-central Indiana for their contributions to their businesses and communities, is sponsored by SMWC and the West Central Indiana Partnership.
“I was incredibly honored to be chosen as a ‘12 Under 40’ honoree. There are so many talented people doing amazing work in our community, so to be recognized alongside them is truly humbling,” Bennett said. “This recognition reflects not only my work but also the mentors, colleagues, students and family members who have supported me throughout my career. It motivates me to continue giving back to the community that has given so much to me.”
Bennett has a professional background in early childhood and K-12 administration. During her tenure with the Vigo County School Corporation, she served as a teacher, early childhood administrator and principal in her home district.
“I was born and raised in Terre Haute and am proud to call it home. I attended Vigo County schools before earning both my undergraduate and graduate degrees locally,” she said. “My husband, Brandon, and I are raising our two daughters, Blakely and Blair, here because we believe it’s a wonderful place to grow up. Education has always been a part of my life. My mother and grandfather were both principals, and I was fortunate to have incredible teacher role models who inspired me to pursue a career where I could make a difference in the lives of others.”
Bennett led the licensing and advancement of 18 early learning sites to Level 3 on Paths to QUALITY™, including the launch and accreditation of the Deming Early Learning Center – the first of its kind in the county.
She oversaw 100-plus staff and collaborated with organizations such as United Way and Early Head Start to improve early learning in the Wabash Valley, before coming to SMWC as department chair and associate professor of education.
“I teach future educators, oversee our education programs and work to ensure our graduates are well prepared to enter today’s classrooms,” Bennett said. “One of the most rewarding parts of my role is helping students build the confidence, knowledge and skills they need to become exceptional teachers. I have even had the opportunity to teach a few of my former third-grade students in my college courses. Knowing that the educators we prepare will go on to impact thousands of children throughout their careers is incredibly meaningful.”
Bennett believes that giving children a quality education is one of the greatest gifts a community can provide, so she serves locally on the boards for the Terre Haute Children’s Museum and the Vigo County Education Foundation. She also volunteers as a room mom in her daughters’ classrooms.
“Whether through board service, volunteering or my work at the College, my goal is always the same: to help children and educators succeed,” she said.
