Women of The Woods: Virginia Ginger Smith ’89

Virginia Ginger Smith enrolled in the Women’s External Degree program at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College for her second bachelor’s degree in business administration after she became interested in business when she began her career at Princeton Mining Company.  

Smith served as president of Princeton Mining Company, Inc., from 1990 until 2017. She also served on the boards of Deep Vein Coal Company, Inc. and Princeton Mining Company, Inc. until April 2016. 

Before coming to The Woods, she earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Indiana State University. She volunteered and served as a substitute teacher in the Vigo County School Corporation. 

Smith received a Distinguished Alumnae Award from SMWC in 2013. Smith served on the board of trustees from 1993-1997 and 2001-2010. She was a member of various committees and held leadership positions, including board secretary and board vice chair.
