The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College’s (SMWC) 2026 Pomeroy Classic, presented by Indiana State University Federal Credit Union, was the most successful yet.
“This year’s outing is especially exciting for us. It’s our biggest one yet,” said Sarah Mahady ’05, community partnerships and advancement officer. “We will have more than 30 teams out on the course and an incredible 39 sponsors supporting today’s event. That kind of participation speaks volumes about the strength of this community and the shared commitment to SMWC athletics.”
The golf scramble on May 1 involved 120 participants hitting the course at Idle Creek in Terre Haute on a cool, partly sunny afternoon. The winning team will receive a $200 certificate from the Idle Creek Pro Shop. All of the money raised from the event will directly benefit student athletic programs at SMWC.
“A lot of our board members and staff are former athletes, either in high school or in college, and we like to be able to support their mission to continue their athletic careers,” said Randy Jensen, member of the ISU Federal Credit Union board of directors.
Cam Crawford, a golfer with the team from Eckart Supply, has played in the golf outing every year for the last five years.
“I love coming out to support this event and the student-athletes at SMWC every year,” Crawford said.
Player Nick Surber, of Terre Haute, was glad to be with his friends and hit the course for a good cause.
“My buddies and I live out here and we’re glad to be supporting the event,” he said.
SMWC student-athletes also participated in the event, both as golfers and as volunteers. It was a chance for them to meet and thank the community for its support.
“It’s great to get to meet all of the awesome people on the course today who are supporting our student-athletes,” said Lisanel Rodriguez, a senior women’s volleyball player and sport management major from Bronx, N.Y., who helped staff the registration table.
Support from the golf outing helps student-athletes to be all-around successful during their college careers. Last fall, 30 Pomeroy student-athletes were recognized as 2025 Fall Scholar-Athletes by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for earning a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
“The support of people at this event helps make our students successful in and out of their sports,” said Kevin Lanke, SMWC’s associate vice president for athletics.
SMWC President Brennan Randolph shared a similar sentiment for everyone who came out to golf.
“We’re thankful for all of the support that helped to make today the largest golf outing we’ve ever had,” he said.
