Nursing Students Present Research, Evidence-Based Practice Projects

The undergraduate junior nursing students presented posters about a research project they completed this year. The third-year Master of Science in Nursing students gave oral presentations. 

“Their projects vary considerably, from care of Amish communities to the nutritional and lifestyle impacts in the treatment of depression and anxiety,” said Crystal White, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, director of the graduate nursing program. “The third-year graduate students give oral presentations describing their evidence-based practice projects, which is their thesis replacement assignment.” 

Undergraduate nursing students and their projects that were showcased during the event include: 

  • Alondra Castaneda, Ruby Gray and Matilda Hillsman – De-escalation Training in Reducing Workplace Violence Against Psychiatric Nurses 
SMWC Master of Science in Nursing student Kacie Podgurski, BSN, RN , presents on the topic, Dual Screening for Postpartum Mental Health during Nursing Research Day.

Explores the current evidence on the effectiveness of de-escalation training in reducing workplace violence against nurses in acute psychiatric units. 

  • Michaela Cohee, Maya Murphy and Macy Schaffer – Best Practice for Human Papillomavirus: Prevention in College-Age Students 

Seeks to understand the risks and severity of HPV. The findings from this review highlight a persistent gap in HPV awareness, vaccine knowledge, and series completion among college-aged populations. 

  • Lyndsay Crumrin, Hanna Boardman and Grace Geisler – CLABSI Prevention in Neonates 

Central line-associated infections (CLABSIs) are a common form of infection in healthcare settings. CLABSIs are frequent among all age groups but can be severe and even life-threatening in neonatal intensive care units (NICU’s). The purpose of this review is to identify the underlying causes of central line-associated bloodstream infections. 

  • Brooklyn Deck, Bishop Mellinger and Mikaela Wingler – Sensory Therapy and Autism in Adolescents: A Literature Review 

Adolescents with autism often struggle with communication, lack social skills and have sensory issues. The purpose of this review is to explore the types of therapies that benefit adolescents with autism. 

  • Claire Donald, Samatha Dyche and Alexandria Sparks – Effects of Electroconvulsive Therapy on Patients with Depression 
Attendees listen to the nursing students present at the SMWC Nursing Research Day on May 5.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a treatment used for depression, mainly in treatment-resistant patients. The purpose of this investigation is to look at the quality-of-life outcomes and nursing implications related to ECT. 

  • Charles Harr, Shirley Kennedy and Gabriel Goff – The Effects of Post-Intensive-Care-Syndrome in an ICU 

Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) is a condition acquired from traumatic Intensive Care Unit experiences. Oftentimes, these stays in the ICU can lead to physical, mental and psychological troubles. The purpose of this investigation is to explore the characteristics and manifestations of PICS. 

  • Allie Shaughnessy, Bentley Meyer and Carlington Henry – Music Therapy’s Effect on Agitation and Depression in Dementia Patients 

Individuals with dementia are often put into nursing homes or assisted living. This change can be very traumatizing and unsettling for the individual as well as for the caregiver or family members. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of music therapy on this population.
