Jennie Mitchell, Ph.D., professor emerita and adjunct faculty at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), had a global leadership publication featured in the Library Publishing Coalition’s (LPC) inaugural Library Publishing Showcase Week in the cost savings category.
Mitchell serves as editor of “Αρετή (Arete) Journal of Excellence in Global Leadership,” a peer-reviewed, open-access journal publishing research, case studies, essays and posters across disciplines. Founded in 2022 and named for the Greek concept ἀρετή, meaning excellence or virtue, the publication fosters discussion, debate and theory development in global leadership.
The publication was one of three Private Academic Library Network of Indiana (PALNI) Open Press publications featured in the showcase. The PALNI Open Press empowers PALNI-supported institutions to share scholarly, creative and educational content through open-access publishing. Supporting the creation of journals, textbooks, monographs and digital exhibits helps institutions advance teaching, learning and research without incurring platform maintenance costs.
“Reducing the cost of textbooks for students is almost a movement these days, and it would be difficult for us to sustain what we’re doing without PALNI, which has helped us make this open press for others who want to publish their work,” Mitchell said. “Being selected for the LPC Publishing Showcase Week underscores the significance of Arete’s mission and the collaborative work behind it. Our partnership with PALNI, our international reviewer community and our contributors across disciplines makes this journal a vibrant platform for advancing leadership theory and practice.”
Showcase participants were selected from submissions across the LPC community, reflecting the breadth of innovative work in library publishing. The week coincided with the launch of the new library publishing advocacy website, https://librarypublishingcreates.org.
In a statement, Showcase Week co-chairs Jessica Kirschner, digital publishing coordinator at Virginia’s Academic Library Consortium, and Molly Reed, strategic communications director at PALNI, said:
“Library Publishing Showcase Week celebrates the innovation, creativity and impact of library publishing programs everywhere. We’re thrilled to spotlight projects that expand access, amplify diverse voices, and show how libraries are shaping the future of scholarship.”
