How the SMWC Campus stays sustainable

Blog | 04.21.2023

Sustainability is more than a 14-letter word at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC). It’s a value put into action. SMWC is committed to being a leader in environmental sustainability and implementing mirroring practices, curriculum and programs. In addition to events like Foundation Day of Service and events put on by student clubs and organizations, there are several ways that SMWC salutes its value of sustainability. Check out sustainable features that can be found on campus at The Woods!

1. Water bottle filling stations

At SMWC, several students, faculty and staff members carry reusable water bottles and cups. In 2014, the College invested in 10 filling stations as an early stakeholder in the sustainable water movement. With over a dozen reusable water filling stations, SMWC can see the total number of disposable water bottles saved daily.

2. Sustainable furniture

Made from the Caps to Benches Project, completed in 2020, picnic tables, trash cans and benches can be found all over campus. Each furniture item was made from broken-down plastic bottle caps collected by faculty, staff and students. SMWC partnered with Vigo County Solid Waste Management for the project.

3. Recycling bins are everywhere

At SMWC, we believe that everyone can do their part. Recycling bins can be found in every building on campus to guarantee students the opportunity to recycle. From paper recycling stations to bins designated for plastic products, SMWC houses a variety of resources for students to use.

4. Save paper, use a Novisign

In an effort to reduce paper usage, Novisigns are located in several buildings on campus, including academic buildings, the Knoerle Center and residential buildings. Campus events, announcements and other useful information are digitally advertised on the Novisigns to keep the SMWC community informed.

5. Hard copy assignments – go digital!

For several years SMWC has launched the use of online resources for academic courses, from digital textbooks to utilizing online course platforms to submit assignments and essays without using numerous sheets of paper. In 2020, a program was implemented for first-year students to receive an iPad and Apple Pencil to use for class and assignments as a sustainable and efficient resource.

Whether you choose to use only recycled materials or you use a reusable water bottle, every act is valuable in being sustainable. SMWC models best practices to educate our community, helping individuals become responsible citizens contributing to our campus’s well-being and the planet’s health.
