Choosing a major after finishing high school feels like you’re deciding on the rest of your life all at once. Similarly, existing college students who have switched their majors multiple times feel like they’ll never find what they want to study—so what should they do?
The first step to choosing a major you’ll enjoy is to get the details. Here at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, there are countless resources to help with your choice: the Career Center, meetings with advisors and professors, speaking with other students and as you know—the internet. There are also internships and academic clubs which advocate for greater exposure to the field(s) of your choice, allowing for networking and exposure to potential majors. While many students’ first consideration when choosing a major is the kind of job it lands, it’s worthwhile to look into who teaches the major’s material, what courses make the major and what learning strategies those courses develop.
While the most important thing is that you study something you’re passionate about, majors lead to degrees and degrees to jobs. If you have a specific job in mind, it’s helpful to study that position and gain an understanding of what kind of tasks you’ll be responsible for on a daily basis. This is where the first step comes in, as you can find what coursework—and resultantly major—best matches your dream-profession’s needs. But wait, there’s something I have to admit…
There’s no rush!
In most cases, it’s fine to try a major or two or five, as there are often plenty of elective spaces on your transcript to keep your graduation on-track. I’m sorry, but there’s one last secret—the major listed on your diploma isn’t as important as you think. What’s important is demonstrating competency in your field and finding what pathway arms you with the skills you want to have in your repertoire when you hit the market.
