Terre Haute North High School senior, Jordan Bray, has been selected as the winner of the Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Scholarship at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC).
This prestigious and competitive scholarship is awarded annually to a female high school senior that demonstrates academic talent, leadership skills and a commitment to community service. Bray will receive a $13,000 renewable scholarship each of her four years at The Woods.
Saint Mother Theodore Guerin, a woman well ahead of her time who impacted countless lives, founded SMWC in 1840. An entrepreneurial leader who was dedicated to serving all people, regardless of race, religion or background, Guerin was passionate about educating women and preparing them to become leaders.
“Jordan reflects the caliber of student we seek and that will excel here,” explained Beth Terrell, vice-president for enrollment management. “Her commitment to scholarship, which is reflected in her academic performance, and her many contributions to the community make her an excellent choice for this scholarship.”
To say Bray is academically sound is an understatement. She excels in advanced courses in English, world and US history, macroeconomics and government. Her courses also included speech and composition for college credit.
Bray sincerely believes in the strength of community. “Making the world a better place starts with us, the people,” noted Bray. “Ordinary acts that we may dismiss have the possibility of making a lasting impact on someone else.”
She lives what she believes by delivering Christmas baskets for the Tribune-Star Christmas basket drive, volunteering at the Terre Haute Humane Society and at a St. Ann’s charity event. She also participates in the school’s HERO initiative, an anti-bullying program, and in the Link Crew, a freshman orientation program. She has maintained a good work ethic during her employment at Baesler’s Market and SteinMart.
Additionally, she exhibited her talent as an outstanding soccer player at North for three years. “I believe Jordan to be an exemplary student-athlete as well as a person of tremendous character with significant leadership potential,” said Kyle Baker, head soccer coach.
At SMWC this fall, Bray plans to major in marketing and continue her soccer career.
