Martha Reed, Heart of SMWC’s Career Center

Blog | 02.26.2026

Martha Reed, MS, director of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College’s’ Career Center, is a wealth of knowledge for students on the hunt for internships, job shadow opportunities or their first post-college job.

That’s why she hopes students will make the Career Center one of their earliest stops on campus.

“Career preparedness is something students don’t always realize they need to start on early in their freshman year,” said Reed, who has served in the center for five years. “Each year they are here, they’re building toward that first job, so I’m grateful that I get to be the one who can help students with internships and job searches and career readiness activities. These experiences build on each other and prepare them to start a career after they walk across the stage and accept their diploma.”

Students often come to Reed when they’re figuring out a career path and need advice about what major to study. Once they’ve determined a path, Reed helps with study abroad or graduate school options, job search assistance and practice interviews. A four-member student career peer team also supports Reed by offering resume reviews.

“The team makes sure all students get the same service when they come through the Career Center because it’s important that they can leave here with a solid resume for the future,” Reed said. “We’re also here as a listening ear because job searches can get overwhelming sometimes, and students will often come by just to talk about what’s going on.”

This is why the Career Center brought on one of its most vital team members, OTTIS BEAR – Opportunities Towards Tomorrows Internships, Success, Betterment, Effective Cover Letters And Resumes.

“Students often feel anxious about career decisions, interviews and job searches. OTTIS provides a friendly, non-judgmental presence that can ease stress and make the Career Center more welcoming in the office and at events,” Reed said. “He is our first point of contact because they approach him and ask about him, which starts the engagement with what we do. He’s a gentle reminder that the Career Center is a safe space to ask questions and seek help. He also adds personality and fun to what can sometimes be a serious process.”

The Career Center also offers: outreach programs and classroom presentations; two, yearly Suit Up Days at JCPenney to help students dress the part on interview day; and a chance to learn proper office etiquette. The Career Center also planned a series on knowing your value in February.

A native of Panama, Reed spent nearly 14 years finishing her undergraduate degree, but she’s now the proud recipient of both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She’s made it her life’s work to ensure students have the support they need to reach their education goals.

“I love working with students because I’ve been where they’re at,” she said. “What I love most is to watch the ‘awe ha’ moments a student experiences when something finally clicks for them. I love knowing that I played even a small part in helping them get into a career they love.”

Last year, about 300 students came through the SMWC Career Center. You can find Reed year-round, helping Woods students and alumni on the second floor of the Rooney Center. Appointments are recommended.
