Reflection: Remember Where You Came From

Blog | 06.25.2025

Allison Cloutier ’25 shared these remarks during the 2025 Reunion Banquet.

I chose SMWC for a very specific reason- because of its small class sizes and the unique, family-like atmosphere. I remember visiting campus for the first time and feeling something I couldn’t quite put into words. It was more than just a school; it was a community. I didn’t want to be just a number in a massive lecture hall- I wanted to learn, to connect and to grow in a place where people knew my name, where professors took the time to understand my goals and where classmates became lifelong friends.

That feeling only grew stronger with time.

What makes this College truly special are the values it stands in. Two of the four core values- sustainability and social justice- have had a profound impact on me. Sustainability here isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a way of life. Whether it was through campus initiatives, coursework or community projects, I learned what it means to care for the planet in thoughtful, meaningful ways. That mindset has stayed with me- and will continue to guide me in the years to come.

Equally powerful was the College’s commitment to social justice. I was challenged to think critically about the world around me, to speak up and to listen deeply. Through discussions, service projects and real-world experiences, I gained not only a deeper understanding of inequality but also a stronger sense of responsibility to help create a more just and inclusive world.

Together, these values taught me that learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom- it happens in our choices, in our communities and in the kind of people we strive to be.

So, to my professors, mentors and friends- thank you. Thank you for being part of my journey, for pushing me, supporting me and inspiring me. This college has been more than a stepping stone- it’s been a home.

As I move forward, I carry the lessons, the laughter and the values with me. And I know that no matter where life takes me, I’ll always be proud to say- I came from The Woods.
