News | 01.04.2023

Alumna, emerita trustee and generous benefactor Cindy Hux Martin ‘78, passed away on December 30, 2022.

Martin graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration.

“Cindy brought such light and life to everything she touched,” said Dottie L. King, Ph.D., president. “She served the College in so many ways, including being an advocate for the growth of the institution, which included helping to build the Jeanne Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center.”

Joining her family business, Tri-Industries, Inc., straight out of college, Martin quickly became the chief administrative officer. She went on to become the chief financial officer and chief executive officer of many other family-owned businesses, including Tri-Quality Mining and Martin Landscaping, Inc.

She was the president and CEO of Hux Oil Corp., as well as the president and founding director of the Hux Family Charitable Trust. Passionate about entrepreneurship, she and a fellow Woods alumni together owned and operated Bunch of Ladies, a successful and unique gift and garden retail store.

Martin shared her passion for building community and caring for others with many throughout the Terre Haute community. Growing up, Martin was taught by her parents the importance of serving others. She took that lesson to heart.

“Cindy’s commitment was always rooted in prayer and her Catholic values. She loved The Woods and Saint Mother Theodore Guerin, always living her life with passion and love for others,” said King.

Martin served on the College’s Board of Trustees from 2006 to 2015, following in her father, Vernon Hux’s footsteps. Vernon Hux was an SMWC trustee from 1979 to 1998. Through excellence in her career and service to her community, she embodied the principles dear to SMWC.

As a vital part of the Terre Haute community, she held director’s seats on the Union Hospital Board, the Union Hospital Foundation Board and the Bank of Lawrence County. Martin gave much to the community, holding civic leadership roles in such organizations as the Service League of Union Hospital and 100+ Women Who Care.

She was the recipient of the SWMC Distinguished Alumni Award in 2014, in addition to receiving Union Health Foundation’s Baur Award for service, Hamilton Center’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service and Hospice of the Wabash Valley’s highest honor, the Chapman Root Award.

She was born August 31, 1956, in Terre Haute to Vernon Hux and Donna M. Harbrueger Hux, who both preceded her in death. Her family and friends are working to plan a celebration of Martin’s life in the spring.
