Traditions & Celebrations
Traditions are a big part of life at The Woods. They are a way for you to bond with fellow students, show your pride in the College, and stay connected to the college community long after graduation.
Some of our most popular traditions include:
Ring Day
During your junior year, you'll become eligible to receive The Woods ring, a symbol of academic achievement and the official entry into the community of "Woodsies" throughout the world. Distinctive and readily identifiable, the ring features a monogram "SMW" on the rectangular top of an onyx stone, an oak leaf base, six acorns representing the College's founders, and your class year. The oak is an insignia for strength and durability of character.
Students receive the rings during an emotionally-charged ceremony that includes the singing of the "Ring Song," a tradition that has been an important part of The Woods since the song was first composed by the class of 1962.
Big Sis / Li'l Sis
Upper-class students "adopt" freshman during their first semester, helping them become acclimated to college life and acquainted with The Woods community.
Senior Crown
Seniors receive a crown of leaves at the Faculty-Senior Reception, held the week before graduation. The crown signifies the success of the student and that The Woods has given them a well-rooted foundation for the rest of their lives.
