Becoming fluent in Woods lingo

Blog | 01.20.2022

Chances are, as you’ve sifted through Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College’s website, social media and emails, you’ve come across a term or acronym you didn’t recognize. The Woods has a language of its own — and now you have a chance to learn it.

The Avenue: This beautiful road leading to campus is the main thoroughfare for on-campus and commuter students. Whether you are an online or graduate student, we highly recommend coming to campus just to experience what we call “The Avenue moment.” As you drive down the road lined by trees, you’ll have a sense of calm and belonging — something The Woods is all about.

Aurora: This is the College’s literary magazine. All students, alumni and employees can submit a variety of arts to this publication.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception: Known as the “Big Church,” this stunning structure is located on campus. The Sisters of Providence use this space, but all are welcome.

Barbara Doherty Dining Center: Usually called Doherty Dining, or just the dining hall, this is the new dining facility attached to Les Bois Hall.

Bon Appétit: They are College’s food service provider. They focus on sustainable farm-to-table foods that are nutritious yet delicious.

Career Center: When you are looking for employment, resume help or networking possibilities, the Career Center is where you need to go. Located in Le Fer Hall, it’s a one-stop-shop to explore opportunities.

Club ’64: To keep in tip-top shape, you can go to the campus gym, located in Knoerle Center. It has new equipment, free weights and more for you to explore. Don’t forget your water bottle!

Conserve: This is short for Conservatory of Music, one of the first buildings on campus.

Counseling Center: College can be a significant change for many students — that’s why the Counseling Center, located in the same building that many students live in, provides sessions, resources and a safe space to all.

Formal Parlor: One of the campus’s many historic spaces, the Formal Parlor is used for events, as a classroom and for meetings. It’s on the first floor of Le Fer Hall.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): You’re probably familiar with this universal federal form, but it’s so important we wanted to put it here. Indiana residents must file their FAFSA before April 15. It must be completed each year to reapply for federal and state grants. More questions? No worries — our financial aid team is here to help.

The Grotto: When you seek a serene spot, look to the Grotto. It was built as a replica of the one in France. It’s a shared space with the Sisters of Providence.

Health Services Clinic: The Woods has its own clinic, located in the library. As a branch of Union Health, a nurse practitioner is staffed to provide physical exams, immunizations, assessments and more.

Hulman Hall: This is the main academic building on campus. Science, art and other lectures are held in this building.

Jeanne Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center: Commonly known as Knoerle Center, it is home to all Pomeroy athletics, including Hamilton Arena, Ariens Atrium and Club ’64.

Learning Resource Center (LRC): If you have questions about classes, writing, time management or more, the LRC is the perfect place to stop by. It’s on the library’s second floor and provides tutoring and resources to improve your grades.

Les Bois Hall: Les Bois — pronounced lay-bwa — is a new addition to the campus in 2021. It houses upperclassmen and graduate students. The dining hall is also attached to the residence hall.

Le Fer Hall: Often shortened to just Le Fer, this is the main housing on campus for students. Built in 1924, it’s a castle-like structure that has been filled with memories.

Master of Arts in Art Therapy (MAAT): This graduate degree, often shortened to MAAT, aims to make a difference in lives through creativity.

Master of Arts in Music Therapy (MAMT): Like MAAT, this graduate degree seeks to heal through music.

Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA): This program enables healthcare professionals to learn to help others.

Master of Leadership Development (MLD): An innovative program unique to The Woods, an MLD is offered online and through a hybrid format.

McMahon Ballroom: Often shortened to just “the Ballroom.” Some convocation-type events are held in this classic space. It is in the north wing of Le Fer Hall.

Oakley Student Center (OSC): Located in the lower level of Le Fer Hall, the OSC has a pool table, ping pong table, vending machines and a cozy place to hang. All are welcome to use this space, and it often hosts Campus Life events.

Pomeroy Pedals: The bike share program that is open to all. Have you seen the numbered blue bikes on campus? You are welcome to take one for a ride around our beautiful campus. Just put it back at a bike rack when you’re done!

The Porch: When you hear this, it refers to Guerin Porch. You’ll find tables with umbrellas for a good study or lunch break.

Saint Mother Theodore Guerin (SMTG): We talk about SMTG a lot — she is, after all, the foundress of the College and Indiana’s only saint. She traveled to America from France with five sister companions. They created a motherhouse for the Sisters of Providence and added an Academy to teach young women. A prestigious scholarship and medal are named after her. A shrine to her is located in the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

Sister of Providence (SP): A group of these women founded the College, and we still share a campus with them.

Studio ’64: Not to be confused with Club ’64, Studio ’64 is a great place to hold events. It has a central location in Le Fer Hall, so it’s the perfect spot for students or employees to host an activity.

Sullivan Parlor: Unlike the Formal Parlor, Sullivan is a very informal space in Le Fer Hall that is always open for students to study, watch TV or just hang out.

Sunken Garden: As you walk out the front doors of Le Fer Hall and down the grand steps, you’ll see the Sunken Garden. This green space is the setting for many weddings and a great place to lay a blanket for a picnic.

Woods Core: As a set of thought-provoking classes, similar to other institutions’ general studies courses, you’ll be encouraged to develop new perspectives. The classes offer an array of topics to make students well-rounded and help them find their passions.

WoodsNet: Using your student email and password, you’ll have access to WoodsNet — the place that stores all the information you need to succeed. Announcements, files and more are stored in this cloud-based database.

Woods Online (WOL): SMWC is a leader in distance education. Woods Online has transformed from one of the first programs of its kind into a successful degree path for all.

Woods Student Center (WSC): When you need a place to relax, grab a snack and hang with friends, the WSC is your place. The Woods Café is located here — so grab a drink and take a breather from classes in the comfy chairs. It’s on the first floor of the library.
