President King speaks on traditions

Messages from President King | 04.06.2020

Dear Students,

Traditions hold a place of great importance at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. As we have navigated the realities of COVID-19 and taken steps to protect your health and well-being, I have held onto the hope of celebrating your achievements together. While we have made the decision to postpone both Ring Day and Commencement, we are doggedly holding onto June 20 as an alternate date for both, even while acknowledging the unknowns of the future. The details are still being worked out, and we ask that you please hold this date in your calendars.

I recognize that for some, this new date will not be possible. My goal is to find a date late enough to allow the possibility of gathering and that includes as many of you as conceivable. I am asking Dr. Janet Clark, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Life, to also coordinate a plan to celebrate academic and leadership accomplishments.  More details will be provided as we work to implement these plans.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College enjoys a 180-year legacy of caring for her students. In this long and storied history, the College has weathered many challenges including the Civil War, both World Wars, the Spanish Flu pandemic and so many more. Together, we will tell a new story of how we came together and met the needs of our students during this challenge. I pray that you continue to focus on finishing this semester well, that you remain healthy and that we gather together for many occasions for years to come at our Woods!

Blessings,
Dottie King, Ph. D.
President
