The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Music and Theatre Department will present “These Shining Lives” by Melanie Marnich. It is produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc. The production will take place on April 1 and 2 at 7 p.m. and April 3 at 2 p.m. in the Cecilian Auditorium in the Conservatory of Music on SMWC’s campus.
In the 1920s, The Radium Dial Company opened a factory in Ottawa, Illinois. Over the next 11 years, more than a thousand women would be hired to paint the dials on clock and watch faces. “These Shining Lives” is based on the true story of some of these women and how they fought against the company after it became clear that they had been poisoned while doing their jobs. Experience their story of friendship, strength and determination as they refuse to give up even when the company and the public seem against them. Their fight would change the rules and laws governing worker safety.
