What would images say in art therapy? Would paintings talk about depression or anxiety? Would a collage mirror a stressful event? Could a handmade doll help reclaim a troubled childhood?

“Let the Image Speak” showcases the work of 11 SMWC graduate students in the College’s renowned Master of Arts in Art Therapy program (MAAT). Located in Hulman Hall 130, the exhibit is open from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. until June 15, 2012.

Painted masks float above plaster hands and altered books. From a delicate paper puppet to an alpaca fiber tree, the creativity and professionalism of these exhibits reflect the diversity of the program and its students. “This exhibit closes a learning loop. They started with a portfolio and they are ending with a master’s exhibition,” said the program’s director, Kathy Gotshall, ATR, LCSW. “This is all amazing, but it is also personal.”

Gathering at The Woods from eight different states, and one all the way from Canada, the students used artistic and therapeutic techniques to create pieces that tell the story of their journey through the program. The art thesis exhibit is the creative element of an intensive culminating project, which also includes research and an internship. Students must complete all three components before graduation.
