The View From Here

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Music and Theatre Department is proud to present Margaret Dulaney’s “The View from Here,” Friday, Oct. 9 through Sunday, Oct. 11 in Cecilian Auditorium on campus.

Set in a small town in Kentucky, “The View from Here” is a comedy about an agoraphobic. Fern, a woman in her mid-thirties, has not left her house for six years. She takes in neighborhood babies for a living. Her nurturing talents are put to the test when her sister lands on her couch in a catatonic state and her neighbor, whose wife has just left him, moves in along with his abandoned baby. In the midst of this confusion, Fern’s fears are put to the test as well when she wins a microwave at the Super Kroger but must appear in person to claim it. “The View from Here” is ultimately about healing and the pain that hope carries with it.

“This play does what I think theatre is best at: combatting the stigma of mental illness,” states Danielle O’Connor, theatre director and productions manager. “Though the play does deal with serious mental illnesses, it tackles those issues with a sense of humor which is crucial. There are some serious moments, but this play is actually a comedy.”

The show will run Friday, Oct. 9 through Sunday, Oct. 11, 2015. Friday and Saturday evening performances will begin at 7:30 p.m.; the Sunday matinee will be at 2 p.m. A brief reception will follow the final performance.

“One of the providential things about this show is that, due to school breaks, schedules and whatnot, it happens that this show will be performed during Mental Health Awareness Week (October 5-11, 2015) and the Saturday evening performance will actually occur on World Mental Health Day (October 10, 2015),” explains O’Connor. “I think it’s a wonderful example of Providence, and it’s equally important to use it to start a dialogue about mental illness.”

Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for high school students and senior citizens; free admission for area college students with IDs and children under 12. The Box Office will open one hour before each performance. For ticket information, call (812) 535-6211 or order tickets online.
