Choosing what you want to do for a career can seem intimidating. At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), we know it can be stressful when choosing a major. Our faculty and staff are with you every step to ensure you are confident and comfortable with your decision, no matter your path. Check out some tips on how to choose your major.
1. Narrow down your interests
It’s important to note your specific interests and how they could play a part in your career. Do you love working out at the gym? Perhaps a degree in kinesiology would intrigue you. Do you thrive on creatively designing graphics or art? Majoring in graphic design might be the perfect fit. With over 30 majors to choose from, you’re sure to find the perfect major for you!
2. Take your time
Choosing your major is a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly; don’t let the pressure and stress get to you. Take your time when narrowing down your choices. If you’re unsure about what major to choose, do some research and take time to think about it. There is plenty of time to decide what major you want to pursue.
3. Talk about it
One of the best things about SMWC is that you don’t have to go through essential processes alone. If you’re struggling to choose a major, having conversations with people from the Career Center, your professional advisors and professors can be helpful.
4. Consider all factors
Of course, your major should interest you, but remember that there are always other factors to consider when choosing. For example, understanding what kind of career positions lie within a major is important. Learning the entry-level salary or hourly wage is also helpful information. Researching and fully understanding vital details is significant when choosing your major.
5. Know that the path can always change
It can feel like a lot of pressure to settle down on choosing what you want to do for your career. The best part is that you can always change your mind. You can change your major if you’re being called to pursue a different major or career. Just because you choose a specific path doesn’t mean the path can’t be unique or change directions. It is ok to change your mind. Your professional advisor and staff in the Career Center can help answer any questions about your major or changing your major.
