In the changing landscape of today’s education, “private” no longer equates to “unaffordable.” In fact, private colleges are now more competitive with public institutions than ever before. Private institutions generally have a higher sticker price. However, in some cases, a private education may actually have a lower out-of-pocket cost after financial aid is factored in.

In only their second of year of competing in the Ethics Bowl at Marian University in Indianapolis, Ind., Saint Mary-of-the-Woods students Dagny Gargas, Lacey Humphrey and Jacqueline Peterschmidt placed second and will advance to the national competition on February 21, 2016, in Reston, Va.

Community leader receives Aspire Higher Award

Throughout her career, Becky Buse has always been interested in service to the community. At the 2015 winter commencement, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) honored her for that service. Buse received the President’s Aspire Higher award which recognizes community leaders who demonstrate a passion for using the present to create a better future.

2015 Winter Commencement

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) celebrated its 178th commencement on Saturday, December 12, 2015. A total of 66 graduates from 14 different states walked in the ceremony – 27 with bachelor’s degrees and 39 with master’s degrees. Winter commencement includes students who have graduated from May through December 2015 and also students who are candidates for graduation later in the spring.

SMWC music therapy professor and student work with special needs children

You’ve heard the saying, “Two heads are better than one.” Imagine the good that can be done by four heads coming together for a collaboration to benefit special needs children. That’s what happened between three professors and the director of the Community School of the Arts when they developed “Literacy and Music: For Life!” – a program that fused music therapy and occupational therapy to help children with special needs work toward communication, writing and social interaction goals, including handwriting and letter identification.

MLD grad becomes university president

Since completing the Master of Leadership Development (MLD) program at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) in 2009, Jayson Boyers has had three career advancements. Most recently, Boyers was named the president of Cleary University in Michigan. Boyers became the tenth president in Cleary University’s 132-year history on October 1, 2015.

SMWC's inaugural WoodsGivingDay huge success

Voices expressing thanks, the chattering of donations, popcorn popping, cheers erupting as the total count continued to rise – these were the sounds in the WoodsGivingDay command center, or the Ariens Atrium of the Jeanne Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center on Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) campus. SMWC held its inaugural WoodsGivingDay on Giving Tuesday, December 1, 2015 and raised $48,712 in 24 hours. A phoneathon, social media hashtag campaign and on-campus activities all contributed to the success of the day.

SMWC education majors explore urban schools in Indy

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) education majors gained valuable insight into the world of education in urban schools through a two-day field trip. As part of the Field Experience I: Urban Education course at SMWC, future teachers had the opportunity to explore four schools in Indianapolis: St. Mary’s Child Center, Carl Wilde School 79, Beth-EL-Zedeck Early Childhood Center and Theodore Potter School 74.
