Girls in sixth through eighth grades are invited to explore science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) during the fifth annual Expanding Your Horizons conference at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) on November 3, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College embarks on an $11M campaign aimed at enriching the total college experience and increasing recruitment efforts by building a sports and recreation center, according to President Dottie L. King, Ph.D. The College kicks off the campaign on Friday, October 12, 2012, with a gala fundraiser for donors and friends that highlights opportunities for supporters to become involved. The College has raised $6.5 million of the funds needed to build the facility during the quiet phase of the campaign.

A SMART way to learn: SMWC upgrades student success – both campus and distance – with new technology
Guided by the director of SMWC’s learning resource center, Kimberly LaComba, tutors can access a distance student’s computer and help them solve an equation, edit an essay or practice for a test – all in real time. With the help of a grant from the Clara Fairbanks Foundation, SMWC upgraded the LRC’s technology to include a SMART board.

Thanks to their relatable, unforgettable lyrics and their impressive stage presence and swagger, Town Mountain manages to rise above many of bluegrass bands touring today. Town Mountain will perform their distinctive sound at the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Four-Star Series on October 23, 2012, at 7:30 p.m., in the Cecilian Auditorium. The performance is free and open to the public.

Three SMWC students spent the summer examining bionic limbs, super computers, fusion reactors, vertically-aligned carbon nanofibers and cyber security tools as interns at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Monique Bate Akoachere, Ph.D., an international biochemist who has traveled the world studying some of the deadliest diseases, namely malaria and anthrax, joins the Woods faculty as the new assistant professor of chemistry.

In this comedy, Ellen is an accomplished gourmet cook and Callie is an accomplished devourer of her culinary creations. They have opened a new chic restaurant – The Golden Carousel -- and the audience is treated to an evening of mayhem as they strive to satisfy a group of eccentric diners

Senator Robert Byrd passed a bill in 2004 designating September 17 as Constitution Day, commemorating the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. Additionally, the observance provides an opportunity to learn more about the founding document.
