No Horsin' Around

Described as the largest gathering in Indiana focused on the horse enthusiast, the HHF is the major fundraising event for the Indiana Horse Council (IHC) to support IHC equine programs. According to a survey commissioned by the IHC, current statistics show that equines are a $2.6 billion industry in Indiana. Approximately 40,000 people attend the HHF over the three days. Attendees come from across the state of Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Canada.

Woods students gain much while giving in the Dominican Republic

For 11 years, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College has conducted Alternative Spring Break service trips. This year was a bit different, however. This year was SMWC’s first international mission trip. Twelve students and three staff members embarked on a trip to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, spending their spring break serving others.

Woods students celebrate "Family" on Ring Day

Family – that was the theme of the 94th annual Ring Day tradition at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) that took place at the Church of Immaculate Conception on Sat., March 19, 2016. The Ring has long served as a connection among those that are a part of The Woods family. In this highly anticipated and moving ceremony, qualified students received their Woods Rings, a symbol of pride, friendships, academic achievement and personal growth.

Husband and wife to experience Ring Day together

Husband and wife to experience Ring Day together

For many students at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), Ring Day is a culmination of their journey at The Woods – a special ceremony in which they can reflect on all they have accomplished. Students earn an onyx ring their junior year and are able to choose someone to co-present, along with President Dottie King, Ph.D., as they receive their ring during the ceremony. It is often the most anticipated and remembered day, even above graduation. So you can imagine how special it must be for Hannah and Jordan Schultz, Birdseye, Ind., a married couple who will participate in Ring Day, this year, together.

Girls and boys learn leadership skills, make new friends, discover new interests and build self-esteem in a safe and beautiful environment in summer camps at Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC). Young people gain valuable hands-on experience through a variety of summer camps giving them irreplaceable experiences: exploring a natural habitat, discovering the world of technology, developing horse care and riding skills, seeing the world differently through photography, considering careers in health care, nurturing creativity through music and theatre and learning about bike safety and maintenance.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College competes in National Academic Ethics Bowl

Demonstrating reasoning ability and critical thinking to debate ethical issues and attain the best moral decision, the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Ethics Bowl team finished in ninth place at the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl, an initiative of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE), on February 21, 2016. The Woods was one of 36 final teams advancing out of ten regional competitions from across the United States. SMWC tied for ninth place, missing advancement to the finals by only ten points.

Horse: A Way of Life

"It's more than just riding horses," Sara Schulz, department chair of equine studies at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) said about the College's equine program. And indeed, it is much, much more. SMWC is the only college in the state and one of approximately 20 colleges in the U.S. to offer a Bachelor of Science in Equine Studies. It's a unique program with so much more than meets the eye.
