Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) is proud to announce that Alejandra Tellez has signed a letter of intent to accept a soccer scholarship with the Pomeroys.
Tellez’s talents as a smooth technical player and tenacious defender are well-known in northwest Indiana. She has captained the Panthers of Griffith High School, winning multiple honors both on and off the field. As a high school player, she was honored as a First Team All-Conference selection in the Northwest Crossroads Conference and winner of the Best Mental Attitude Award. She was also selected for the Indiana Elite Showcase and named as an All-Area Honorable Mention by the “Post-Tribune”, a Chicago Sun-Times publication. She has played premier club soccer with Three Lions, and coaches a youth team in the Griffith Soccer Club.
But that’s only part of the story. Her academic accomplishments are even greater. Named as an All-Academic selection both by her conference and the Indiana Soccer Coaches’ Association, she is also the winner of the prestigious Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Scholarship at SMWC. This competitive scholarship is awarded not just for academic excellence, but also for “students nationwide who have used their unique experiences, aptitudes and abilities to make a difference in their local communities and beyond.”
This combination makes Tellez a powerful prospect for The Woods. Coach Mike Aycock sees Tellez as an immediate contributor in the Pomeroy defense and a personality who could easily become a leader in the team. “From the time we first saw Alejandra in the Elite Showcase and then had the chance to learn what a great student and person she is, we have wanted her to come to The Woods,” he explained. “She did everything in that tournament, from defending to attacking, with speed and grace and grit. Her soccer talents will be a huge help for us, but she brings so much more than that. We’re excited to have her.”
