Traditional Undergraduate Program Scholarship

The criteria listed determine eligibility only and do not guarantee receipt of the scholarship.

All Scholarships: Unless otherwise noted, the following scholarships are for qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree-seeking program. Students must maintain the specified cumulative GPA and show academic progress towards their degree to renew each scholarship for a total of eight semesters unless otherwise noted.  All scholarships are subject to reduction or replacement by other offers or awards.

Merit Awards:

SMWC Freshmen Merit Scholarships

  • Amount: Determined by GPA and test scores at the time of admission towards the cost of tuition only.
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in degree seeking program.

  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain up to a 3.0 GPA (depending on scholarship) and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters.

Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Scholarship

  • Amount: A total of seven awards, two Full Tuition scholarships and five $17,000 awards, towards the cost of tuition only.
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program must submit a SMTG application and a written essay by December 31. Replaces the Merit Scholarship.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters.

Wabash Valley High School Scholarship

  • Amount: Limited number of 50% tuition scholarships. For the 2015-2016 academic year.
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC in a full-time degree seeking Campus program. Student must graduate in the counties of: Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion, or Vigo in Indiana or Clark or Edgar counties in Illinois. Students must apply and be admitted by October 31 to be considered for the competition on campus.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 3.0 minimum academic cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for an additional three years (total of 8 semesters).

Pomeroy STEM Scholarship

  • Amount: Awarded to Indiana students who pursue a STEM major; scholarship will be awarded for a total of eight semesters towards the cost of tuition. Students are awarded up to $2,500.
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking STEM program.  Majors include: Biology, Life Science Education, Math Education, Math, Medical Technology, Pre-professional (pre-med, pre-vet, pre-dental, pre-pharmacy, etc.), Environmental Science & Health and Wellness.  Can be combined with other awards.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 3.0 minimum academic cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their STEM degree to renew the scholarship for an additional three years (total of 8 semesters).

Honors Program Scholarship

  • Amount: Unlimited number of up to $2,500 toward the cost of tuition only.
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program and admitted into the SMWC Honors Program.Applicants must submit an Honors Program application and a written essay. Can be combined with other awards.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must remain in honors program and maintain a 3.0 minimum academic cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters.

Special Awards and Scholarships:

21st Century Scholars Scholarship

  • Amount: At the time of admission students who have a 3.0 or above are eligible for $20,000 and students with a GPA from 2.5-2.99 are eligible for $15,000. The scholarship can be used towards tuition and fees.
  • Qualifications: Qualifying female admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program, must be a state verified 21st Century scholar and must live on Campus. Students are also required to complete 30 credit hours per academic year and file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by March 10th.  Students must also make all corrections or updates to the FAFSA by the May 15th deadline.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students receiving the $20,000 must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA, students receiving the $15,000 awards must maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA. Both must maintain satisfactory academic progress towards their degree and adhere to the 21st Century rules/regulations of the State to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters. The SMWC 21st Century Scholarship cannot be combined with other institutional awards or scholarships (except athletics).

SMWC Legacy

  • Amount: Student must be related to an Alum of SMWC. Relationship will determine whether they will receive $1,000 or $5,000 towards the cost of tuition only.
  • Qualifications: Admitted as a full time student in a degree seeking program and cannot be combined with Alumnae Referral Grant. Alum must be a Grandparent, Parent (step), Sibling (step), Aunt/Uncle, Niece/Nephew to be eligible for $5,000. Alum must be a cousin, in-law, or distant relative to be eligible for the $1,000. Must provide name, year of graduation, and contact information of the Alum.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA to be eligible for additional three years.

Pomeroy Athletic Scholarships

  • Amount: Determined by Head Coaches and Athletic Director.
  • Qualifications: Qualifying female admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program are considered for Pomeroy Athletic Scholarships by the Coaches based on athletic talent and team needs. Students must be a campus degree seeking student and the award is renewable yearly based upon Athletic Director and Head Coach recommendations. No separate applications required. Can be combined with merit scholarships. Will not exceed the total cost of tuition.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters and remain and active member of the team.

Military Grant

  • Amount: Up to $3,000 awards towards the cost of tuition.
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program can receive the award for the duration of their enrollment if the student maintains full-time status. Grant is awarded to the military service members who have served on active duty or are currently serving in the reserves spouse and/or dependent. No separate applications required. Can be combined with any other awards (documentation required in the form of DD-214 or NOBE, and marriage certificate if applicable.)
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree. The grant is applied yearly towards the cost of tuition for all qualifying students based on full-time enrollment.

SMWC - Catholic Charities of Terre Haute Scholarship

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College will offer one award per year up to full tuition after eligible state grant funds are applied (if applicable). The recipient must be in a degree-seeking program and enrolled as a full-time student. The scholarship will be available to the recipient for up to eight semesters and is non-transferable. The SMWC - Catholic Charities of Terre Haute scholarship cannot be combined with other institutional awards.

Qualifications:

  • Apply for admission online, meet all program admission requirements and be admitted to the College
  •  Receive a referral letter from appropriate program director or member agency
  •  Attend full-time as a degree-seeking student
  •  Enroll at the College within one year from when the scholarship was awarded
  •  Apply for federal and state financial aid programs by March 10

Application process:

  • Apply for admission and be admitted to the appropriate program at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.
  • Complete the Catholic Charities Terre Haute Scholarship Official Application, including a 500 minimum word essay about the importance of a college education and what it would mean for the applicant to be chosen for a scholarship and a referral letter from the program director.
  • Submit the completed scholarship application, essay and a referral letter from the program director member agency of your affiliation to: Catholic Charities Terre Haute, 1801 Poplar St., Terre Haute, IN 47803 by March 10th.
  • Qualified candidates will be asked to interview with the Agency Director of Catholic Charities Terre Haute and appropriate staff members.
  • Scholarship recipients will be notified by April 15th.
  • The decision of the SMWC/CCTH Scholarship Committee is final.

Post-9/11 GI Bill/Yellow Ribbon Program

  • Amount: The Indiana highest cost of tuition as determined by Veterans Administration. SMWC and VA will award funds to cover the total cost of tuition and fees.
  • Qualifications: Qualifications determined by the Department of Veteran Affairs as determined by the Post 911 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon Program requirements. Cannot be combined.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters.

Music and Theatre Scholarships

Music scholarships may be combined with most other scholarships (some exclusions apply). Music Scholarships are renewable each year based on progress in the music program.

SMWC Performing Arts Scholarship ($500 to $3,500 per year)

  • Qualifications: Awarded to a select few students who are full-time, undergraduate students demonstrating excellence in music skill and potential. These students must declare a major in music or music therapy. Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program must contact the Department of Music and Theatre and attend an on-campus audition.
  • The awards are based on talent. No separate applications required. Can be combined with most merit scholarships (some exclusions apply).
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 2.5 minimum academic cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters in Music or Art majors.

Sister Sue Pietrus Memorial Music Scholarship (up to $3,300 per year)

Scholarships will be awarded to qualifying students who are full-time, undergraduate students declaring a major in music or music therapy.  The number of available scholarships may vary each year.

Mildred and Harry Martin Term Scholarship (up to $2,500 per year)

Scholarships will be awarded to qualifying students who are full-time, undergraduate students declaring a major or minor in music. The number of available scholarships may vary each year.

Sister Marie Brendan Harvey Endowed Scholarship (up to $2,400 per year)

Sister Marie Brendan Harvey, alumna of 1951, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College educator and former SMWC director of alumnae affairs, founded the College’s Madrigal Program. Scholarships will be awarded to qualifying students who are full- time, undergraduate students declaring a major in music or music therapy, or outstanding members of the SMWC Madrigals (auditioned ensemble). The number of available scholarships may vary each year.

Sister Mary Thomasetta Term Scholarship (up to $1,000 per year)

Scholarships will be awarded to qualifying students who are full-time, undergraduate students declaring a major in music.  The number of available scholarships may vary each year.

Mary Alice Shannon Klueh 1948 and Duane Klueh Term Scholarship (up to $750 per year)

Scholarships will be awarded to qualifying students who are full-time, undergraduate students declaring a major in music therapy. A preference is given to students from the Wabash Valley. The number of available scholarships may vary each year.

Scholarships for Designated High Schools:

SR. Jeanne Knoerle Memorial Scholarship

  • Amount: One recipient per year for a total of $100,000 over four years; $25,000 per year.
  • Qualifications: Qualifying female admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program must have attended and graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in Cleveland, Ohio. No separate applications required. Must apply Before March 1, 2014
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters.

SR. Barbara Doherty Scholarship

  • Amount: One recipient per year for a total of $100,000 over four years; $25,000 per year.
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program must have attended and graduated from Providence St. Mel High School in Chicago, IL. No separate applications required.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters.

Sue Hamilton Trustee Scholarship

  • Amount: One recipient per year for a total of $60,000 over four years; $15,000 per year.
  • Qualifications: Qualifying female admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program must have attended and graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in Cleveland, Ohio. No separate applications required. Must apply Before March 1, 2014
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters.

Cristo Rey Network Scholarship

  • Amount: Limited number of 50% tuition scholarships
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program must have attended and graduated from a Cristo Rey Network High School, have a minimum 3.0 GPA and 1100 SAT or 24 ACT test score. No separate applications required. Replaces the Merit Scholarship.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters.

Guerin College Preparatory HS Scholarship (River Grove, IL)

  • Amount: Limited number of 50% tuition scholarship
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program must have attended and graduated from Guerin College Preparatory High School (River Grove),have a minimum 3.0 GPA and 1100 SAT or 24 ACT test score . No separate applications required. Replaces the Merit Scholarship.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters.

Guerin Catholic HS Scholarship (Noblesville, IN)

  • Amount: Limited number of 50% tuition scholarship
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program must have attended and graduated from Guerin Catholic High School (Noblesville), have a minimum 3.0 GPA and 1100 SAT or 24 ACT test score. No separate applications required. Replaces the Merit Scholarship.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters.

Students are also required to complete 30 credit hours per academic year and file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by March 10th.  Students must also make all corrections or updates to the FAFSA by the May 15th deadline.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA, satisfactory academic progress towards their degree and adhere to the 21st Century rules/regulations of the State to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters.   • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 or above and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree.  Can be renewed for a total of (8) semesters.

SMWC Nursing Scholarship - commuter students

  • Amount: $12,000 per year
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in the Nursing Program.  Students who do not meet the requirements for the program will be awarded endowment awards to replace the scholarship.  Replaces merit awards and cannot combine with other offers.  21st Century scholarships will replace the Nursing scholarship.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 or above and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree.  Can be renewed for a total of (8) semesters.

Pomeroy Athletic Scholarships

  • Amount: Determined by Head Coaches and Athletic Director.
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program are considered for Pomeroy Athletic Scholarships by the Coaches based on athletic talent and team needs. Students must be a campus, degree seeking student and the award is renewable yearly based upon Athletic Director and Head Coach recommendations. No separate applications required.   • Amount: Amounts vary depending on remaining financial need.
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program.  The amount of the scholarship is determined by the student's unmet financial need after other awards are applied.  If additional awards are applied after the initial packaging, the SMWC Endowment will be adjusted accordingly.  Once the student is committed to SMWC the generic endowment will be switched to a named donor. 
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the award for a total of (8) semesters.

SMWC - Catholic Charities of Terre Haute Scholarship

  • Amount: One $17,000 award towards the cost of tuition only.
  • Qualifications: Admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking music program.  Must submit an audition request form, followed by an audition, essay and interview. 
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA, satisfactory academic progress towards the music degree and satisfactory progress on primary applied instrument to renew the scholarship for a total of (8) semesters.

Scholarships will be awarded to qualifying students who are full-time, undergraduate students declaring a major in music therapy. A preference is given to students from the Wabash Valley. The number of available scholarships may vary each year.

Scholarships for Designated High Schools:

SR. Jeanne Knoerle Memorial Scholarship

  • Amount: One recipient per year for a total of $100,000 over four years; $25,000 per year.
  • Qualifications: Qualifying female admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program must have attended and graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in Cleveland, Ohio. No separate applications required. Must apply before May 1, 2015.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters.

SR. Barbara Doherty Scholarship

  • Amount: One recipient per year for a total of $100,000 over four years; $25,000 per year.
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program must have attended and graduated from Providence St. Mel High School in Chicago, IL. No separate applications required. Must apply before May 1, 2015.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters.

Sue Hamilton Trustee Scholarship

  • Amount: One recipient per year for a total of $60,000 over four years; $15,000 per year.
  • Qualifications: Qualifying female admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program must have attended and graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in Cleveland, Ohio. No separate applications required. Must apply Before Mat 1, 2015.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters.

Cristo Rey Network Scholarship

  • Amount: Limited number of 50% tuition scholarships
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program must have attended and graduated from a Cristo Rey Network High School, have a minimum 3.0 GPA and 1100 SAT or 24 ACT test score. No separate applications required. Replaces the Merit Scholarship.
  • Renewable Requirements: Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and satisfactory academic progress towards their degree to renew the scholarship for a total of 8 semesters.

Guerin College Preparatory HS Scholarship (River Grove, IL)

  • Amount: Limited number of 50% tuition scholarship
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program must have attended and graduated from Guerin College Preparatory High School (River Grove),have a minimum 3.0 GPA and 1100 SAT or 24 ACT test score . No separate applications required. Replaces the Merit Scholarship.

Guerin Catholic HS Scholarship (Noblesville, IN)

  • Amount: Limited number of 50% tuition scholarship
  • Qualifications: Qualifying admitted students attending SMWC full-time in a degree seeking program must have attended and graduated from Guerin Catholic High School (Noblesville), have a minimum 3.0 GPA and 1100 SAT or 24 ACT test score. No separate applications required. Replaces the Merit Scholarship.
