Finals week tips for students

Blog | 05.05.2023

It may be hard to believe, but another successful year is wrapping up at The Woods. From fun memories at Homecoming and Christmas time to attending sporting events and formals, it’s been a great year! With the year winding down, there’s one more item for students to complete – final exams! At SMWC, we know it can be challenging to find your system. Check out some tips to make the most of your finals week!

1. Don’t cram! Do the math first.

Before hitting the books, be sure to assess your current grades. Ask yourself, what class have I been struggling with this semester? Calculate what course grades you want to end up with at the end of the semester and see which classes may need more focus throughout your study periods.

2. Take a break!

Studying for hours can hurt more than help. Taking study breaks is ok to do; in fact, it’s encouraged! Going for a walk around campus, getting a drink at the Woods Café or even getting a workout in a Club ’64 may be just what you need to ace that final!

3. Don’t be studious solo. Find a study buddy!

Studying with a peer can hold you accountable, keep you motivated and expose you to different ideas and thoughts on a course topic. From comparing course notes to sharing different study tips, the buddy system might be the perfect fit for you

4. It’s not a sprint! Pace yourself.

Cramming all your studying at the last minute will only overwhelm you. Make sure you begin your study well in advance of your final exams. Refresh your knowledge from the semester and add recent topics you’ve learned to ensure you feel confident about all chapters covered throughout the semester.

5. Struggling with one way? Try another.

Everyone has their niche regarding study methods, but if you struggle with your usual study habits, try a different approach. Whether you prefer rewriting notes, creating acronyms or using visual items like flashcards, there are numerous study techniques to try.
