News | 08.12.2022

Faculty and staff at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) gathered in Hayes Auditorium just before students moved in for College Belonging, a workshop hosted by guest speaker Lisa M. Nunn, Ph.D. The event was sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Nunn, director of the Center for Educational Excellence at the University of San Diego, shared strategies and tools to use inside and outside the classroom to bolster students’ academic success and well-being at The Woods effectively.

In sharing her experiences as a professor while explaining what she learned through student interviews, Nunn explained that many factors play into simple solutions for what first-generation and continued-generation students experience, as well as topics of student identities, diversity and inclusion. The workshop consisted of conversations to better create an inclusive environment for students who are a part of minority groups. Two common themes from the workshop were what the College could do to enhance genuine interaction and a sense of belonging for students and colleagues on campus. “They want to feel like they belong. Like they matter. They want to be heard.” Nunn shared statistics from her research and elaborated on the three categories of belonging: social, campus community and academic belonging. Faculty and staff then discussed how they take part in creating atmospheres to enhance each student’s experience.

In addition to discussing first-generation and continued-generation students, there was also a focus on creating an inclusive environment of diversity. Although they are sometimes viewed as uncomfortable topics, Dee Reed, associate vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion, explained how important it is for higher education to recognize the need for understanding these topics. “Achieving a sense of belonging for first-generation and first-year students can be a difficult and stressful process with many obstacles to navigate. Dr. Nunn’s insights provided faculty and staff with practical tools and strategies to foster belonging and the well-being of our students. Intentionally applying these strategies in our daily interactions is the key.”

While focusing on the mission of the College, those in attendance took time to engage in conversational exercises, discuss differences between roles on campus and brainstorm ways to enrich an environment of belonging and inclusivity for all students at The Woods. Attendees also participated in breakout sessions and open discussions about their experiences and opportunities for the future of SMWC. The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is planning for more educational and interactive workshops in the future.
