The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Music and Theatre Department presents the Spanish tragedy The House of Bernarda Alba, by Frederico Garcia Lorca on October 14-17, 2010 on the campus of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, Cecilian Auditorium.
The College is proud to welcome back guest artist Delia Taylor in the role of Bernarda Alba. Taylor works as a professional actress, stage manager and director and is currently the producing manager of The Jewish Center Professional Theatre in Washington D.C. Senior Danielle O’Connor serves as director and will incorporate music composed by Associate Professor of Music John McIntyre.
The House of Bemarda Alba continues to be read all over the world. Its setting is specific to the values and customs of a rural Spanish people, but the play’s appeal is universal. The play focuses on the house of the strict matriarch, Bernarda Alba, whose daughters long for freedom and marriage. Only the eldest has the chance to marry and the resulting conflict culminates in tragedy. Written in 1936, this work examines the conflict between the rigid conventions of a strict social order and the passions and desires of the human spirit.
The House of Bernarda Alba was Lorca’s last complete work, finished shortly before his assassination by the Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War. Lorca was born in 1899 in a small town in southern Spain and began his career as a poet and dramatist. During his life, he worked with and befriended many of the great artists of his time, including Salvador Dali and Luis Brunel.
