Blog | 04.05.2023

Internship opportunities are beneficial in helping you determine the right career path for you. At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), our faculty and staff guide you through every step throughout your college journey, especially when choosing an internship. Although several skills can be gained in an internship, there are more benefits to completing an internship than one might think.

1. Exposure to real-world situations

Although college courses offer simulations and critical thinking activities, an internship can provide you with real-world experience that can be learned from and taken into the workforce after earning your degree. Exposure to real-life situations will enhance your problem-solving, critical thinking and creativity skills.

2. Build your network

You can never have too many connections, especially when fresh out of college. A benefit to pursuing an internship is building relationships and connections in your professional network. A solid network is always an advantage in the workforce, as you never know when a connection may come in handy.

3. Boost your resume

Often, employers are impressed when seeing an internship on a resume. Having an internship on your resume can give an excellent first impression. It can show employers that you’re engaged with a specific field and possess skills that could be an asset to their company, presenting more reasons to hire you.

4. You’re hired!

Not all internships guarantee a direct job offer, but it remains a point of consideration. After building a relationship with a company and proving yourself as an asset, a job offer may be offered directly upon graduation.

5. Expand your skills and confidence

After completing an internship, you may find that you’ve gained skills, knowledge and confidence that you didn’t have previously. Having real-world experiences will enhance your organization, time-management and critical thinking skills. Learning experiences will also help you expand your knowledge and gain confidence in your field of interest.

6. Learn about your field of interest

Learning about your field of interest before graduating is beneficial. Having a clear understanding of the career path you’re pursuing will only help you in the future. If you haven’t chosen a career path, an internship may be the perfect opportunity to find out what interests you and what career you want to pursue.

Whether you’ve declared your desired career path or you’re still deciding, there are numerous benefits to completing an internship. The Career Center at SMWC will work with you to help you find the right internship.
