Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) is proud to announce the launch of its new online Master of Sport Leadership degree, debuting in Fall 2026.
Designed for driven professionals ready to lead in the fast-paced world of athletics, this dynamic program equips students with the advanced skills and strategic insight needed to excel in coaching, sports administration and athletic leadership.
Building on the strong foundation of SMWC’s Master of Leadership Development program, the Master of Sport Leadership represents a forward-thinking redesign of the previous Sport Leadership track. This 30-credit-hour, fully online degree offers flexible 8-week courses, allowing students to earn their master’s degree in as little as one year, without putting their careers on hold.
“Leadership in sports is about more than competition. It’s about vision, collaboration and integrity,” said Tonya Sawyer ’07, Ph.D., chair of business and leadership. “This program empowers students to elevate their leadership potential and make an impact across every level of the sport and recreation industry.”
SMWC’s vibrant campus culture makes it the perfect home for this program. With more than half of its students competing as student-athletes and a growing number of Sport Management majors in the Business and Leadership Division, SMWC continues to be a hub for athletic and academic excellence.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in sports and entertainment occupations is expected to grow significantly over the next decade, with nearly 100,000 new openings projected each year due to expansion and workforce turnover.
The Master of Sport Leadership at SMWC blends practical, real-world application with the College’s signature focus on ethical leadership, personal growth and community impact, helping graduates stand out in an increasingly competitive field.
