By Ashley Bennett, M.Ed., Education Department Chair, Assistant Professor
As a professor at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, I believe teaching is one of the greatest callings a person can answer. Each day, teachers hold the extraordinary power to shape lives — to spark a student’s curiosity, to build their confidence and to open doors they never dreamed possible. Teaching is not simply a profession; it is a lifelong commitment to lifting others up, believing in their potential even when they cannot yet see it themselves.

At SMWC, we prepare our future educators to embrace this calling with heart, wisdom and resilience. Our philosophy of education goes beyond coursework and lesson plans. We believe that to teach well, you must first understand the incredible influence you hold and the trust placed in your hands. We encourage our students to lead by example — to be passionate learners themselves, to greet challenges with creativity and to recognize the endless possibilities that exist in every classroom.
We teach that a good educator not only imparts knowledge but also inspires hope. In a world that is constantly changing, teachers are steady guides, helping students navigate challenges, discover their strengths and realize they have something valuable to offer. Our students learn that teaching is about planting seeds that may bloom long after their time in the classroom is over.
At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, our mission is to inspire future teachers to approach their careers with courage, kindness and vision. We are proud to walk alongside them, nurturing their growth as they prepare to step into one of the most meaningful roles anyone can hold. It is a privilege to know that the future is being shaped, one passionate, dedicated teacher at a time.

A dedicated educator and leader, she brings years of experience to the role, having previously served as an elementary school principal. A proud native of Terre Haute, Indiana, Ashley is passionate about preparing future teachers to lead with compassion, skill and a commitment to lifelong learning. Outside of her professional work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and their two daughters, finding balance and inspiration in both her family life and her career in education.
